Updates to Route Description:

In many places the Route Description and this web site refer to the Ramblers' Association.  This is historically accurate, but the association is now styled simply as the Ramblers.

Route Descriptions

Section 1
1.5 b) (page 5)  should now read: Continue past fenced copse (in chalkpit with children's playground) then soon after end of fence TR on mown path through wildflower meadow to park perimeter.
1.6 b) (page 5)  Under [Refreshments], the Pond Tea Rooms, has been renamed the Coach House Café.
1.15 (page 7)  The distance referred to should be 4km (2½ miles), not 6km (3¾ miles).
2.1 (page 7)  The Bull pub has been renamed The Coach House - no connection with the change at 1.6 b) - just a coincidence!

Section 2
2.1 (page 4)  The Bull pub has been renamed The Coach House.
2.14 (page 8)  The Southdown PSV bus 236 now operates along this road, 4 times a day (Mon - Fri) between Edenbridge, Westerham, Oxted, Dormansland and East Grinstead.
3.1 (page 9)  The 594 bus now operates 9-10 times a day (Mon - Sat) between Oxted, Limpsfield Chart and Westerham.  This also applies to page 4 of Section 3 (3.1)

Section 3
3.2 d)  Should now read: "Follow field boundary on your L to red gate, KA across small field and go through gate by cottage wall."
3.2 e)  Should now read: "TL on Rd (Dairy Lane) - part of a Roman road."
3.3 b)  The "field" referred to is more of a narrow strip of scrubland.

Section 4
4.2 a) (page 4)  Note that Starborough Lane is subject to flooding after heavy rain.
4.5 a) (page 8)  Starborough Castle is now properly called Starborough Manor, though it may still be shown on maps as Starborough Castle.
5.1 (page 12)  The toilets at the back of the car park in Forest Row are now closed permanently.  Wealden District Council have arranged for the public to use free alternative facilities nearby.  These are: Brambletye Hotel and Chequers Inn in The Square (on main A22 road); Lenny's Sandwich Bar (turn right at the Foresters Arms then cross over); Community Centre (turn left at the Foresters Arms then cross over - opposite VGW route).

Section 5

Page 7 (in box)  Southern Link to Buxted Station should read:
a)  TR along Buxted High Street, using the L-hand pavement.
b)  In 1km, opposite Buxted Stores, cross Rd on zebra crossing, then TL past Buxted Inn and bear R to Buxted Station.
If starting from Buxted Station:
b)  should read:  TL past Buxted Inn to Buxted Stores, then cross Rd at zebra crossing and TL up R-hand side of Buxted High Street for 1km to Pound Green, where TR along Limes Lane to rejoin VW.

Section 7
7.5 c)  Should now read: "On reaching wood bear R along wood edge, go through gate and cross stile to Rd (Hawkhurst Lane)."
7.7 b) (page5)  The watershed referred to here is actually crossed after the stream mentioned at 7.6 d) (page4).

Section 8
8.3 (page 4)  Should read: "TR and follow lane for 1.4km, passing rambling barns of Mount Pleasant Farm, to end of tarmac section by Selmeston Croft."
8.4 and 8.5 (page 5)  The byway that was temporarily closed at the south end of Sheepcote Lane has now reopened (currently for pedestrians and cyclists only).

Section 10 - Route Description
10.8 a) (page 6)  The track was actually used for transporting ballast during construction of the breakwater, and later for the silica boulder trade.

Section 4
4.14 (page 14)  The imposing Jacobean-style house called Thornhill was built in 1795 of sandstone, possibly as a bailiff's house linked to the Hammerwood Estate.  It has recently been converted into luxury apartments.  (We are grateful to Ashurst Wood Historians for this information.)

Section 7
7.14 (page 10)  The Six Bells pub at Chiddingly was named Bargain Pub of the Year in the 2009 Good Pub Guide (www.thegoodpubguide.co.uk).

Section 9
9.1 (page 8)  The information board referred to is at Wilmington village, near the Long Man itself (not near the Berwick Inn).  Recent research on the Long Man of Wilmington, using the latest Optical Stimulated Luminescence technology on rock samples indicate that he was created in the mid 16th century (later than previously thought).  Contrasting possible reasons for his creation have been put forward: as a symbol of the Counter-Reformation (Roman Catholics were seeking to restore papal supremacy at that time) or to commemorate the accession of the protestant Elizabeth I in 1559.  But supporters of a much earlier date of creation may claim that the Long Man we see today could have been superimposed on a previous figure.  Sketches of the figure made in 1710 and 1776 suggest that at that time the Long man had a more physical detail, and even that he was holding a rake in his right hand and a scythe in his left.

Section 10
10.3  The "space-age structures" referred to are actually a "DVOR" (Doppler VHF Omni-Directional Range Beacon) used in Air Traffic Control.  See www.trevord.com/navaids/sfd.htm for information.  We are grateful to Vanguard Wayfarer Alan Foreman for this information.
